Despite all the new competition online these days, with around 2.85 billion monthly users, Facebook is still the largest social media platform in the world. So, it goes without saying that most of us, at one point or another, have created a personal Facebook profile to highlight who we are and what we like to do.

A Facebook Business Page is pretty much the same thing, but instead, it can help showcase your business and grow your following—both on and off Facebook—for free! It’s a powerful tool to leverage for small business marketing, and offers a lot of features and benefits, both free and for a fee.

For many, some of the most impactful features include:

  • The option to keep your business and personal profiles separate
  • A centralized way to communicate and grow your online presence
  • The ability to manage your Business Page yourself (or assign management access to others)
  • A wide range of customization and integration options
  • Automated posting and scheduling features
  • Ability to set goals and track insights

But, before you get started creating your business page on Facebook, there’s a few things you’ll want to consider and information you’ll want to gather to best streamline the process.

Choosing Between a Business Page or Professional Mode?

Sample Professional Dashboard

Facebook provides two business-focused options: the ability to create a separate Business Page and the option to turn on Professional Mode with your existing personal account. What’s the difference, and does it matter which route you choose?

Although a relatively new offering, Professional Mode provides creators, influencers, and media makers the opportunity to build a public presence with their established personal profile. Professional Mode offers access to Facebook’s Reels Play Program and Stars which provides eligibility to make money from Reels all while offering additional tools, analytic, and business-building features that were previously only available to Business Pages.

Professional Mode allows:

  • Anyone on Facebook to follow you to see your public updates
  • An unlimited amount of people to follow your account
  • The option for you to follow up to 5,000 accounts
  • The ability to post private and public content

Professional Mode is a great option for influencers and individual creators who are using their likeness to build brand identity. So, if your goal is to maintain your profile and to share updates from a personal perspective, this is likely a good option.

Here’s how you can turn on professional mode:

  • Go to your Facebook profile
  • Below your profile header, select or tap the menu button (…) on the right side
  • Select or tap Turn on professional mode
  • To confirm, select or tap Turn on to complete the process

If you decide you don’t want to use Professional Mode, you can turn it off (or back on) without affecting your current friends, followers and profile content. None of your privacy settings will change but you may need to go to Settings to change certain visibility factors.

If you’re looking to showcase a product/service, reach potential customers, and want to create a separate business identity, a Business Page is a much better option. It still provides a robust set of tools to help you manage and track your user engagement, as well as a wide range of options to customize your Page and integrate it within your overall marketing plan.

Ready to set up your Page? Great — Let’s get started !

Prepping Your Facebook Business Page

Before you can make a Facebook Business Page, you need to already have a personal Facebook account. Don’t stress about linking your existing profile with your new Business Page! None of your information or photos from your personal account will be visible to followers of your Business account. Tying a Business Page to a personal account is simply necessary to set up your initial Facebook Business Page login, and to identify Page ownership and management/admin access. Later, we’ll go over how to assign admin rights to other users.

Here’s a few things you’ll need before you start:

Pre Facebook Business Page Set-Up Checklist

Alright! Now you’re officially ready to set up your Page and grow your business. We’ll show you how it’s done in five easy steps

5 Easy Steps to Creating a Facebook Business Page

#1

Log into your personal Facebook account.

Facebook login page

#2

Go to Pages

Navigate to the Pages section and select “Create a Page,” OR go directly to https://www.facebook.com/pages/create

Business details page

#3

Add your business details

Now, enter all your business info. There’s a panel on the left that has fields for your business name, category, and business description. The right panel will auto-populate the information as you add it.

Create a page

The Page name should be the name of your business or brand. For the business category, you can choose up to three options. So, for example, say you run a cafe that doubles as a small bookstore — you could choose cafe, coffee shop, and bookstore. Simply start by typing in the field and the closest available matches will auto-populate.

Then, write up a short company bio in the Description field. This will appear when the name of your company is searched, so keep it short and simple (around 255 characters, max) and reflective of your business and brand identity. Once you’re satisfied, select Create Page.

#4

Add contact details

Now that you’ve created the page, another side panel should appear where you can add details such as your website address, business phone number, physical location, and hours of operation. When you’re finished, select Next.

#5

Customize your Page

Now you’ll want to add a profile picture and a cover photo for your Page. Remember, this is one of the first things people will see when they visit your Page, so it's important to choose high-quality photos that make sense for your company and branding.

Customize your page

Here’s a few best practices for choosing profile and cover images:

  • Profile images should be 170 x 170 pixels
  • Cover photos should be 1640 x 856 pixels
  • Make sure the image(s) represent your brand and company identity
  • Don’t steal images or violate copyright laws
  • Make sure the images are both simple and readable
  • Use consistent brand colors and imagery

Desktop preview of page

Once you have your pictures uploaded, toggle between desktop and mobile preview to make sure it’s displaying correctly. In this section you can also choose to add and customize an Action button to help increase engagement and sales. Some options for your action button include:

  • Book now
  • Donate now
  • Start order
  • View shop
